PATCHWORK KNITTING /workshop series.
Homework to all workshops
Barbara has developed a series of workshops designed to introduce you to Patchwork Knitting and beyond. Each workshop can be taken on it's on or in conjunction with others in the series.
1. Knitting Strips
Together the Horst Schulz Way
During this six-hour class you will learn to knit strips together three different ways. You will learn a useful cast on and how to execute perfect edge stitches, so necessary for easy joining. Your strips can be wide or narrow, striped or plain, in seed stitch or garter stitch or any knitting stitch pattern you choose. The focus of the workshop is learning the technique with the goal of planning a vest. A handout with detailed row-by-row directions of each joining technique is provided as well as a schematic for a childs vest. This is a technique only workshop.
Intermediate.
2. Childs Patchwork Jacket
This six-hour workshop focuses on the techniques
used in making a childs multicolored jacket. You will learn, in
addition to the patchwork techniques, how to work a three-needle bind
off, how to do short rows, and to work a one row buttonhole. A detailed
row-by-row pattern for the jacket and numbered schematic is included.
Advanced beginner.
3. Advanced Patchwork Shapes.
This six-hour class focuses on learning the techniques
for knitting hourglass shapes, T -shapes, U-shapes, full squares, shells,
round and circle shapes. You will learn to incorporate stitch patterns,
i.e. slipstitch knitting. A handout of detailed row-by-row directions
for each technique is included. This is a technique only workshop for
those who have taken at least one of the other workshops.
Intermediate.
4. Four-miter Squares, 5 ways
This six-hour class focuses on learning 5 different
ways to knit a full 4-miter square. Each way produces an effect and the
variety of ways allows the knitter the widest choice of how to use these
squares. Squares are knit in stockinet stitch, seed stitch, slipstitch,
garter stitch and/or combinations. A handout of detailed row-by-row directions
for each variety of the squares is included. This is a technique only
class.

5. Finishing, the Horst Schulz Way
During this six-hour class you will learn the techniques
that Mr. Schulz uses to finish these wearable art garments. Techniques
include 3-needle bind off, slipstitch bands with buttonholes, cords, ribbings
and other edgings. This class is limited to those knitters who have already
taken, advanced shapes, 4-Miter Squares 5 ways or Strip Knitting. A written
handout of all techniques is included. Technique only.
Intermediate.
6. Ten Square Evening Purse
During this six-hour class you will learn to miter,
a double decrease every wrong side row, which produces a sharp right angle.
You will learn to join the squares as you knit them. You will learn how
to knit the seams together. I designed this purse to demonstrate one way
to use this single miter square. A detailed row-by-row pattern for the
purse is included as well as a schematic drawing.
Advanced beginner.
7. L-Shaped Patchwork Blanket
This six-hour workshop focuses on the techniques used
in making a child-sized blanket. You will learn how to miter an L-shape
and how to join its garter stitch partner. The L-shape is worked in 3-color
seed stitch, however could easily be worked in garter stitch. A detailed
row-by-row pattern for the blanket and numbered schematic is included.
Advanced beginner.
8. Mitered Magic.
This six-hour workshop focuses on learning the techniques
to knit a 3- mitered and 4-mitered square. You will decide to make the
pillow or a blanket, or perhaps a vest or jacket. There are no limits
to the ways to use this pattern. A detailed row-by-row pattern and numbered
schematic for the pillow is included.
Advanced beginner.
9. Patchwork Strip Pillow
This six-hour workshop focuses on learning how to knit
strips together. The pattern also incorporates single-miter, four-miter
squares and a bias knit strip. I designed this pillow to explore one possibility
of combining various patchwork shapes and techniques. A detailed row-by-row
pattern and a numbered schematic are included.
Advanced beginner.
10. Color For Dynamic Results.
This six-hour workshop is a concise lecture on Color
Theory and a hands-on experience utilizing the theory. How to put colors
together and why they work harmoniously are demonstrated using the yarns
the students bring to class. A written handout of the theory and exercises
to practice are provided.

11. Stained Glass Sweater.
During this six-hour class you will learn to knit strips together to create a one of a kind sweater. The pattern incorporates a zig-zag design that lends itself to many interpretations. You will learn how to shape neck and sleeves within the strip. You will learn how to change the size of the sweater. A detailed row-by-row pattern for the sweater is included as well as a schematic drawing.
Intermediate.
12. Patchwork Designing
During this six-hour class you will learn the basics of designing a vest, using a Patchwork motif. You will use squares, strips or shells. Squares can be single, double, triple and/or quadruple mitered squares, strips can be cables, bias knit or v- mitered and shells can be of any variety you choose. You will learn how to use the shape of the motif to aid in the design. This hands-on class will utilize the measurements and/or vest you bring to class. This workshop will be limited to those who have already learned Patchwork knitting from me. This limitation is to insure that our focus will be on designing: this focus will enable you to design a wearable art garment.
